Nyerere and Amin sons meet to scale Kilimanjaro Mountain together later this month for charity
Godfrey Madaraka Nyerere with Jaffer Remo Amin
when they met in Butiama in April
On April 9, 2009 The BBC World Service brought together the families of two former East African leaders whose hostility toward each other led to a fierce war in the late 1970s.
Jaffer Remo Amin, the son of Uganda’s former president, Idi Amin, and Madaraka Nyerere, the son of former Tanzanian president, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, met for the first time at Butiama Village, the former Tanzania’s leader’s birthplace.
The following day, April 10 to be exact, it clocked 30 years to the day since, following a month-long, decisive battle; Tanzania’s then President Nyerere ousted Idi Amin, whose dictatorial rule led to the deaths of thousands of Ugandans, from power.
The troubled relationship between the two leaders had degenerated into warfare as early as October 1978 when Idi Amin attacked Tanzania and annexed the north-western province of Kagera. The Ugandan leader was forced to flee into exile, first to Libya and later to Saudi Arabia where he died in August 2003.

Today Madaraka Nyerere has announced that he and Jaffer Remo Amin are on course to meeting again. Only this time around through their own initiative and for a totally different cause - that of scaling to the roof-top of Africa, raising funds for AIDS orphans in their wake.
Madaraka, who is currently in Dar es salaam gearing up for the climb, said the event will take off on September 29 and last for six days.

"As with last year, this year I am also combining my climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro with raising funds for charity,", says the soft spoken Madaraka on his blog, 'From Butiama and Beyond'.
He adds: "This year I am raising funds for Community Alive, an organization based in Musoma that is active in providing help to people affected by AIDS, primarily children".
Community Alive was launched in the mid nineties with the objective of informing peers on HIV/AIDS and what they can do to protect themselves, but has since evolved into a program that, today, assists people of all age groups affected by AIDS.Community Alive's assistance to children includes:

*education support activities (school uniforms, shoes, books and pens)
*Home and school visits
*counselling and recreational activities
*food and medical support for families in need
*socialisation and psychosocial support

Madaraka humblily appeals to anyone who would like to support Community Alive and the Mwalimu Nyerere Charity Climb 2009 to donate through the following:
